Outstanding 19th Century Bakhshayesh Rug

An outstanding mid-19th century Persian Bakhshayesh rug with an incredible design! Bakhshayesh rugs are considered among the finest examples of Persian rugs. Prized for their classical, abstract, bold, and large-scale designs, Bakhshayesh rugs are skillfully woven with all-over patterns while also including an abundance of negative space allowing each shape to be appreciated individually as well as part of the whole design. The medallion on this rug is exceptional! A four-lobed indigo flower, circled by a crimson and indigo laurel wreath, rests on two large diamond backgrounds, one woven with natural, undyed, wool, and another dyed a rich crimson red. The diamonds are amidst a fantastic indigo field of large-scale crimson, white, and natural wool flowers and leaves. Also of note is the border, composed with a wide crimson border with large indigo, turquoise, and white stylized flowers flanked by two white borders woven with a multi-colored floral and vine pattern. Truly a collector’s piece!
