This Chinese Art Deco rug, woven in the 1920s, is a radiant example of a uniquely Chinese interpretation of the Art Deco movement. Set against a soft champagne-colored field and framed by a wide indigo border, the composition balances elegance with vibrant ornamentation. At its center sits a boldly colored vase overflowing with blooming peonies—symbols of prosperity and honor. In opposing corners, complementary vases hold flowering chrysanthemums and cherry blossoms, each rendered in brilliant hues. In the lower right corner, a tranquil garden pavilion perches atop a rocky outcropping, overlooking a stylized pond. Brightly colored blossoms—woven in vivid fuchsias, oranges, greens, and violets—dot the indigo border, adding joyful contrast. Chinese Art Deco rugs are celebrated for their bold color palettes, asymmetrical compositions, and incorporation of traditional Chinese motifs. Distinct from their Western counterparts, they brought a fresh, modern spirit to global Art Deco design, merging ancient symbolism with early 20th-century glamour.
