This early 20th-century Persian Bidjar rug stands out for its highly unusual design—an array of asymmetrical, baroque-style medallions, each filled with oversized roses in soft pinks and mauves, nestled among green grasses. The medallions float over a pale indigo ground, while the space between them glows in warm coral tones, giving the whole composition a layered, almost painterly quality. The wide border picks up the floral theme with more large-scale roses in the same delicate palette. Bidjar rugs are known for their dense weave and remarkable durability, often referred to as the “Iron Rugs of Persia.” They're made in and around the Kurdish town of Bidjar in northwestern Iran, where skilled Kurdish weavers use a unique wet-packing technique that results in a firm, heavy pile. But what sets this one apart is its artistic looseness—it breaks from tradition in a way that feels both romantic and modern.
