An extraordinary early 20th-century Persian Senneh rug, c. 1900, hand-knotted in fine wool and distinguished by a striking composition of four grand trees of life. Each tree rises from a stylized vase, blooming upward with bold red blossoms and surrounded by a profusion of smaller vines, flowers, and birds—woven densely into a field that hums with energy and motion. The palette—crimson, deep and pale indigo, gold, green, and white—is both rich and luminous. The border is exceptional: a wide band of oversized floral motifs, flanked on both sides by smaller, mirrored floral stripes. Senneh rugs are woven in Sanandaj, the capital of Iranian Kurdistan, long celebrated for its unusually fine weaving and detailed patterning. Crafted almost exclusively by Kurdish women, these rugs are prized for their precision and balance—symmetry and asymmetry held in constant tension. This rug is a lyrical, living expression of that legacy, both poetic and powerful.
