This late 19th-century Serapi rug is, without question, one of the finest we’ve come across in years. The central medallion follows the classic eight-lobed floral form typical of Serapir rugs, but the execution here is something else entirely—layer upon layer of floral motifs, each rendered with remarkable care. The field is alive with blossoms and scrolling vines, while the border is truly exceptional: vines upon vines, intertwined with a repeating floral pattern that’s both bold and refined. The color palette is everything you’d hope for—crimson, indigo, soft pink, cream, and warm brown—dyed with natural vegetable pigments that have mellowed beautifully over time. Serapi rugs come from the Heriz region in northwest Persia, woven by Azerbaijani Turkish weavers, and are known for their sturdy construction and grand scale. This piece balances that strength with a rare delicacy. It’s the kind of rug that stops you in your tracks.
