This vintage late 20th-century Afghani Bashri rug is a striking example of tribal textile artistry, woven in rich tones of crimson, brown, coral, white, and tan wool. The field features an allover pattern of stylized paisleys—ancient motifs symbolizing life and fertility—interwoven with other tribal elements that give the rug rhythm and depth. The border is a true standout, composed of over a dozen narrow geometric bands, each with its own repeating motif, creating a layered, almost architectural frame around the central design. Woven in northern Afghanistan by Bashri weavers—an offshoot of the larger Turkoman tradition—these rugs are known for their dense pile, durable construction, and bold, deeply saturated colors. Bashri rugs are prized for their ability to bridge rustic charm with graphic sophistication. This one brings warmth, movement, and cultural richness to any room—a floor piece with soul and story that’s just as compelling as any artwork on the wall.
